The extraordinary city of Sant'Agata de'Gothi

On the banks of the mountain river Martorano, between Benevento and Naples, there is an amazing Italian town, as beautiful and unusual as its name is Sant'Agata de'Goti. Even if you don’t go looking for local attractions, which, by the way, are abundant here, but just walk along the narrow streets surrounded by medieval houses, you can get incredible pleasure and a lot of impressions. It is for the incomparable splendor and unique appearance that this place is considered a truly tidbit among tourists.

It is difficult to imagine how long the city of Sant'Agata de'Gothi was born. Even on the question of the origin of its name, historians will not come to a consensus. So, according to one version, the second part of the name - "de'Goti" - arose after the construction of the fortress by the Goths. The following assumption connects it with the Gascon family of the De Goths family who ruled here in the 14th century.

As for the first part of the name - Sant'Agata - everything is much more clear with her: her appearance dates back to the 6th century.

By the way, some of the researchers took the mountain represented in the picture because of its specific appearance as the remains of an ancient pyramid and even offered to start excavations there.

But in the satellite image, the hill already has no external resemblance to the pyramid.

It is impossible not to mention that in 2012 Sant'Agatu de'Gothi was included in the list of the best small cities in Italy. In addition, the Italian Tourism Club awarded the city an Orange Flag quality certificate.
