Three Towers - Three Symbols of San Marino

The main symbols of the small and proud Republic of San Marino for many centuries are the three towers on the three peaks of Mount Monte Titano. They were built at different times and performed various important functions in the life of the state, and today they are just very beautiful architectural elements of an amazing state.

The first tower on one of the peaks of Monte Titano appeared in the XI century. Guaita, or Prima Torre (Prima Torre) - translated from Italian means the First Tower. Of the three famous towers, it was built first, back in the XI century, but later rebuilt many times.

For a long time, the territory of the tower was used as a prison. One of the oldest prisons on the planet ceased to be used in this capacity only in the 70s of the last century, and a museum of the history of San Marino was created on the territory and in the premises of the fortress.

The fortress was cut down right in the rock! Unbelievable!

Chesta, aka Seconda Torre - the second tower of San Marino, the first mention of which dates back to 1253. In 1320, a wall was added to the tower, which connected it to the first tower. The honor was also rebuilt many times, but still generally retains its original medieval appearance.

The tower is a serious and powerful defensive structure. Inside the second tower today is a museum of ancient weapons, numbering several hundred exhibits.

The flag of San Marino towers above all three towers.

Well, the third, the latest tower is called Montale, or Terza Torre. It appeared in the 14th century and was used as a signal tower until 1479. In the same tower there was a prison with a depth of 6 meters, with very limited access inside. Today it is the only of the three towers that tourists cannot get inside, you can only admire it from the outside.

These are the symbols of the oldest republic of the planet.
