Empuriabrava: Catalan resort where there are more channels than in Venice

Empuriabrava - this small coastal town in Catalonia in terms of the number of picturesque canals can compete with the famous Venice. A wonderful climate, picturesque nature and, of course, an unusual layout, made this Spanish city a popular European tourism center. And the length of the network of shipping channels is even greater than in Venice.

Most of the resort towns of Europe, located on the Mediterranean coast, boasts a rich history, interesting sights and architectural monuments. But Empuriabrava is not at all like that; it is interesting to others. The city has a whole network of 35 artificial canals, the total length of which is about 37 kilometers. All channels are interconnected, and also have access to the Mediterranean Sea, on the banks of which Empuriabrava is located. This is a real paradise for sailors and outdoor enthusiasts.

Intensive construction unfolded in this Catalan town in the 60-70s of the last century. Then, through the efforts of architects and engineers, the small settlement was turned into a fashionable resort, where wealthy citizens from all over Europe reached. Picturesque canals cross the entire central part of the city, so you can sail directly to hotels and villas on a yacht or other small boat.

Empuriabrava has an exceptionally favorable climate for all types of summer vacations. The swimming season lasts from May to October, and water activities are available during the rest of the year. The only thing that can spoil the mood of visitors to the beach is a stable wind that blows from the mountains. But such a windy atmosphere made this place a center of attraction for lovers of windsurfing, yachting and wakeboarding. Well, those who are bored with beaches and yachts can practice skydiving, because it is here that the largest center for parachuting in Europe is located.

In addition to outdoor activities in Empuriabrava, you can enjoy stunning nature. On all sides, the city is surrounded by the territory of the Emporda Natural Park, where eco-routes for tourists are laid. The park is located in a low marshy area and is the habitat of about 300 species of birds, so tourists who come on an excursion can admire the beautiful birds.

A successful architectural solution turned Empuriabrava from a fishing village into a thriving resort. Today, about 8,000 people live in this small town, but there are not many native Catalans among them. The owners of lovely houses with garages for water transport are immigrants from many parts of Europe who once came to Empuriabrava to stay and stay here forever.
